In the spring of 1936, the populist front government organized the so-called popular Olympics as a protest to the Olympic Games that were held that year in the Berlin of the Third Reich.
Sportsmen came from all the leftist organizations and unions in Europe and America. When the contest broke out on July 18, many of these "athletes" showed their desire to fight in defense of the Spanish popular republic at that time, since the idea of a republic open to all ideologies had disappeared.
This was the germ of what would later be known as the International Brigades.
