Buttler, is a member of the High Society of Charleston (South Carolina). It's very unconventional for his time.

We'd say it's a stray bullet, gambler, drinker, womanizer. His family denies him, because of the frequent scandals surrounding his life. His cynical mindset allows him to see beyond the patriotism of his close circle, firm believers in the possibility of the existence of a separate Confederate States of the Union.

In the beginning that makes many people tilde him as cowardly or selfish, but his actions as a corsair to break the economic blockade, with which Washington tried to crush the south, made him a certain prestige among the Southern society.

In one of the scenes of the film, Captain Buttler (merchant captain, not the Army), brings from London a hat to the latest fashion to the Scarlet flirt O´hara, despite the mourning that this should lead after the death of her husband, Mr. Hamilton in combat.

This hat is part of the shipment of food, medicine, clothing and ammunition that Captain Buttler carries for the Confederate government from England, mocking with his ship the Yankee blockade.
