The squads of spenders in the Spanish army and therefore in the legion, are composed
by six soldiers and a corporal (as a rule).
The role of the spender in the armies of the nineteenth century consisted in opening the way to the rest of the
unity when some element, be it trees, or construction obstructed the passage.
That's why the members of the squads of spenders, in addition to being the most corpulent of the unit,
they were equipped with tools of zapa: shovel, pickax, ax and saw.
