Joshua Lawrence Chamberlain was a teacher at a school in his native Maine.

He joined the army of the union as a volunteer at the beginning of the American Civil War, and became a highly respected and decorated officer reaching the rank of Brigadier General.

He was well known for his courageous attitude during the Battle of Gettysburg and his charge in Little round Top.

Chamberlain was named Lieutenant Colonel of the 20th Voluntary Infantry Regiment of Maine.

In 1862 he participated in the Battle of Fredericksburg, reaching command of the regiment in 1863.

In July of that year, during the battle of Gettysburg, he starred in the aforementioned little round top charge against the 15th Alabama Regiment.
