During the Great War Italy was allied with France and England against the central empires. Of course, since the war between Italy and Austria for Italian unification and emancipation was still fresh in memory. Although most of the fighting took place in mountainous areas between Austrian mountain and Italian Alpine troops, cavalry and the Italian regular army also had prominent fighting in the areas of Trieste, Istria, Tyrol and Galitzia.
