ARTISAN TOY SOLDIER depicting Sir John Cheyne, a knight in Henry Tudor's army at the Battle of Bosworth. He rides a dark warhorse protected by metal armour covering its head and body. Cheyne wears full plate armour and a helmet topped with a striking pale blue plume, contrasting with the silver finish of his equipment. Modelled, cast and hand-painted with careful attention to late 15th-century armour and horse protection.
Sir John Cheyne was one of the knights who accompanied Henry Tudor at the Battle of Bosworth on 22 August 1485. He was part of Henry's personal bodyguard when Richard III launched his famous charge against the claimant to the English throne. During the fierce encounter, the king struck Cheyne with a broken lance and unhorsed him. The knight survived and continued to serve Henry VII, who later rewarded him with important honours and the title of Baron Cheyne. This TOY SOLDIER commemorates one of the participants in this dramatic episode of the Wars of the Roses, which ended Plantagenet rule and paved the way for the Tudor dynasty.
