During the 13th and 14th centuries, the Italian city-states experienced intense political, economic and military rivalries. Republics such as Florence, Venice, Genoa and Siena defended their interests through alliances and armed conflicts. Their armies included knights drawn from aristocratic families and wealthy urban elites. This TOY SOLDIER depicts an Italian warrior from around 1300, wearing a characteristic mail shirt, a large helmet and metal protection on his torso and legs. Particularly striking are the embossed bronze greaves, showing clear Byzantine influence and reflecting the variety of artistic and military traditions in medieval Italy.
