PR 029 – Vitellius Praetorian Guard Throwing Pilum
This Roman toy soldier depicts a Praetorian Guard during the turbulent year of AD 69, known as the Year of the Four Emperors, when Vitellius contested the imperial throne against Galba, Otho and Vespasian.
The scene captures the moment when the soldier prepares to throw his pilum, the distinctive heavy javelin used by Roman infantry before engaging the enemy in close combat. Its design could make an enemy shield difficult to use after impact, disrupting opposing defensive formations.
The Praetorian wears metallic body armour over his tunic and carries an oval Roman shield decorated with elaborate blue and gold motifs. His dynamic stance, with his throwing arm drawn back and his body turned to generate momentum, conveys the tension of the moment before battle.
An attractive addition for Roman toy soldier collectors and enthusiasts of the military history of the Roman Empire.
