The Roman infantry of the republican era, before the reform of Mario, were divided into several classes of combatants, depending on age, economic ability and social class. The triarios and prínceps, could afford a more expensive equipment with better protection and formed what could be called heavy infantry. The younger, therefore more agile and also with less economic capacity, were composed of the Velites, a light infantry specializing in harassing and luring the enemy to the lines of heavy infantry. The cavalry was composed mainly of members of the equestrian class, of course.
