The Light Infantry Carabinieri of the French army constituted the elite companies of the French light infantry regiments, which were divided into three types of soldiers: carabinieri, equivalent to line infantry grenadiers; hunters, equal to those of line infantry; and vélites, which were equivalent to line voltigeurs. The carabineros were selected from among the tallest soldiers in each regiment, while the vélites were the youngest and lightest in the unit. Their weaponry was similar to that of their linemates, although their functions on the battlefield were very different. The line regiments formed the bulk of the army and were organized in long lines facing the enemy, while the light regiments were used to harass the opponent's flanks and rapid raids.
