The officer corps of a legion was composed primarily of professional military men, the Centurions, whose highest rank, had the rank of praefectus castrorum.
However, the command of the legion always relied on members of the senatorial class and were assisted by what might be called a staff, composed of members of important families of Rome.
These families made different steps in his career of honor, which would later open the doors of his political career.
These were the TRIBUNES, from which we could find two classes:
Tribunes Laticlavius and Tribunes Angusticlavius, these denominations referring to the width of the purple strip of their tunics.
The Laticlavius tribunes were more mature and veteran, while the Angusticlavius would resemble more current cadets or practicing officers.
