PR 015 – Late Roman Military Tribune

During the Late Roman Empire, military tribunes continued to perform important duties within the army's command structure, although both military organisation and the equipment worn by Roman officers had undergone considerable changes.

The appearance of Roman soldiers had changed significantly compared with that of the legions of the early Empire. Helmets became larger and offered greater protection for the head and face, gradually adopting shapes that anticipated some of the designs used during the Early Middle Ages.

Body armour also evolved. Alongside traditional mail and scale armour, different forms of metallic protection were increasingly used. Some retained older military clothing features, such as pteruges, overlapping leather strips hanging from the shoulders and lower edges of the armour.

Weapons also underwent changes. The traditional Roman sword gradually evolved towards longer designs, while military tactics and organisation increasingly incorporated new influences, particularly from Germanic peoples and other opponents with whom Rome maintained continuous military contact.

The Late Roman army was therefore very different from the imperial legions of earlier centuries. Cavalry had acquired growing importance, while foreign contingents, including troops supplied by allied and federated peoples, played an increasingly significant role in defending the Empire's frontiers.

This figure represents a Late Roman Military Tribune, an officer belonging to the Roman military command structure during one of the most fascinating periods of transformation in Roman history.

A handcrafted Roman toy soldier dedicated to the final centuries of the Roman Empire, ideal for collectors of historical Roman soldiers and Late Antiquity military miniatures.
