PR 016 – Late Roman Heavy Infantryman

During the final centuries of the Roman Empire, infantry underwent significant changes in both equipment and fighting methods. The traditional legionary of the early Empire gradually gave way to a different type of soldier, whose appearance and weaponry anticipated some of the characteristics of medieval warriors.

One of the most noticeable changes can be seen in the helmet, which provided much greater protection for the head and face. This development reflected the changing demands of warfare and the growing importance of protecting soldiers against different types of weapons and attacks.

The shield also evolved. The characteristic rectangular or curved scutum of the classical Roman legions gradually gave way to oval and round shields, which became increasingly common among Late Roman troops.

Offensive weapons underwent similar changes. The traditional combination of pilum and gladius gradually lost prominence in favour of spears and longer swords. These weapons could be used for both thrusting and cutting, adapting to battlefield tactics that differed considerably from those of the classical legions.

Body protection also featured a greater variety of designs, including scale armour, made from small overlapping metal plates that provided effective protection while maintaining considerable flexibility.

This figure represents one of these Late Roman Heavy Infantrymen, a soldier whose appearance already recalls the warriors who would dominate European battlefields during the early medieval period.

A distinctive addition to our Roman toy soldiers collection, dedicated to the fascinating transformation of the Roman army during the final centuries of its history.
