On 24 February 1525, the area surrounding the Italian city of Pavia became the setting for one of the most decisive battles of the Italian Wars. The Imperial army of Charles V, comprising Spanish, German and Italian troops, confronted the French forces of King Francis I.

Among the Imperial troops were the German Landsknechts, professional infantry soldiers organised in large formations and renowned for their battlefield experience. Their organisation and tactics were influenced in part by the famous Swiss infantry, although they developed their own military identity in the service of European princes and monarchs.

Arquebusiers represented one of the major transformations in sixteenth-century warfare. These portable firearms increased the offensive capabilities of infantry and helped alter the traditional balance between foot soldiers and heavy cavalry. At Pavia, the fire of the Imperial arquebusiers played an important role in the course of the battle and the defeat of the French forces.

The battle ended with the capture of Francis I, who became a prisoner of the Imperial army. The news caused a tremendous stir throughout Europe and demonstrated the growing importance of firearms and new infantry formations on the battlefield.

The Battle of Pavia remains one of the great episodes of Renaissance military history and symbolises the profound transformation of European armies at the beginning of the early modern period.
