On 24 February 1525, the area surrounding the Italian city of Pavia became the setting for one of the most important battles of the Italian Wars. The Imperial army of Charles V confronted the French forces of Francis I in an engagement that would transform the military and political balance of Europe.

The Imperial infantry included contingents from several territories. Among them were the Spanish and German pikemen, whose role was essential in maintaining the cohesion of infantry formations and protecting soldiers armed with firearms. The combination of pikes and arquebuses was becoming one of the most effective features of Renaissance warfare.

The pike, a long pole weapon, allowed infantrymen to create defensive barriers against cavalry and keep enemy foot soldiers at a distance. Pikemen fought in organised formations, coordinating their movements to protect their comrades and withstand charges by heavily armoured men-at-arms. Their role was particularly important when formations had to advance or hold their ground under pressure.

At Pavia, cooperation between the different Imperial units proved decisive. Spanish arquebusiers delivered effective firearm volleys, while pikemen and other infantry troops helped sustain the fighting and protect the formations. The French heavy cavalry, despite its prestige, could not overcome the combined strength and evolving tactics of the Imperial forces.

The French defeat culminated in the capture of King Francis I, an event that shocked European courts. The victory at Pavia confirmed the growing importance of organised infantry and combined-arms cooperation, anticipating the military model that would reach maturity in the later armies of the Spanish Monarchy.
