HANDCRAFTED TOY SOLDIER representing a 16th-century Doppelsöldner Landsknecht. Sculpted and cast in white metal at 1:30 scale, it features carefully modelled Renaissance clothing, armour and weapons. Each piece is assembled and hand-painted in our workshop in Spain, following the traditional craftsmanship of Kronprinz Toy Soldiers.
The Landsknechts were German mercenary soldiers who were prominent in European armies during the 15th and 16th centuries. The term Doppelsöldner means “double-pay soldier” and referred to men who received higher wages for undertaking dangerous duties. This Landsknecht stands with a beard, a broad-brimmed hat adorned with a large red feather, a metal breastplate and brightly coloured slashed sleeves. His puffed breeches and red, blue and yellow hose reflect the colourful clothing of these troops. He carries a long sword, as well as a sidearm at his belt. At the Battle of Pavia on 24 February 1525, German Landsknechts fought in the Imperial army of Charles V alongside Spanish and Italian troops. Their experience in close combat and the use of pike formations contributed to the Imperial victory over Francis I of France, who was captured after the fighting. The title did not mean that every Doppelsöldner carried a two-handed sword, during Pavia.
