PR 043 Legionary cleaning armor

Maintaining weapons and protective equipment was an essential part of everyday life for Roman soldiers. Metal armour, helmets and weapons were constantly exposed to moisture, sweat and dirt, all of which encouraged rust and gradual deterioration.

Roman armour, including chain mail and articulated plate armour known as lorica segmentata, required regular care to preserve its protective qualities. Soldiers used oils to clean and protect metal surfaces, helping to keep their equipment in good condition. Olive oil, widely available throughout the Mediterranean world, also played an important role in personal hygiene and equipment maintenance.

Our miniature portrays a Roman legionary seated while carefully cleaning his armour. Rather than depicting combat or military parade, this figure captures an often overlooked aspect of Roman military life: the daily responsibilities of a soldier in the camp and the constant attention required to keep his equipment battle-ready.

This handcrafted Roman toy soldier features carefully sculpted anatomy, a natural seated pose and detailed military equipment. Cast in white metal alloy and individually hand-painted in our own workshop, it reflects the traditional craftsmanship behind historical collectible miniatures.
