PR 008 – Roman Legionary III

Lorica segmentata, the distinctive Roman armour made of articulated metal plates, gradually became widespread among the legions deployed in the western provinces of the Empire, particularly in Gaul, Germania and Britain. However, its use appears to have been less common among units stationed in the eastern provinces, such as Syria and Judaea, where chainmail continued to play an important role.

One of the advantages of segmented armour in humid regions was its relatively straightforward maintenance. Its metal plates could be dismantled, cleaned and treated individually, making rust removal easier. By contrast, maintaining lorica hamata, made up of thousands of interlinked metal rings, required considerably more labour.

Despite its advantages, lorica segmentata never completely replaced chainmail, which continued to be used throughout the Roman Empire. As segmented armour gradually disappeared during Late Antiquity, mail armour retained a prominent place in European military equipment throughout the Middle Ages.

It is interesting to consider whether part of this evolution may have been related to the organisation of military life itself. The Roman legionary was a professional soldier who was personally responsible for maintaining his equipment, whereas during much of the Middle Ages, warriors of higher social standing could rely on servants and squires to perform these tasks.

This figure represents a Roman legionary equipped with the characteristic lorica segmentata, one of the most recognisable images of the Early Imperial legions and a symbol of the technical and organisational development of the Roman army.
