Two Roman legionaries assist each other in putting on their distinctive lorica segmentata, the iconic articulated armour of the Imperial Roman army. This carefully observed scene captures an everyday moment of military life and the close cooperation between soldiers.
This handcrafted TOY SOLDIER set is cast in white metal at 1:30 scale (60 mm) and individually modelled and hand-painted in our workshop in Spain. An unusual two-figure composition for collectors of Roman military miniatures and historical soldiers.
The introduction of the lorica segmentata represented an important development in the defensive equipment of the Roman legions during the Imperial period. Its construction consisted of overlapping iron plates connected by straps, buckles and fittings, providing protection for the torso and shoulders while allowing a reasonable degree of freedom of movement.
Despite its advantages, this type of armour presented some practical challenges. Unlike chain mail, which could be put on relatively easily, the lorica segmentata required some skill to adjust and fasten its different components correctly. Soldiers often benefited from the assistance of a fellow legionary to secure the straps and fastenings around the back and sides.
Our miniature depicts precisely this everyday situation: two Roman soldiers helping each other put on their armour before reporting for military duty. It offers a glimpse into the practical organisation of Roman military camps, where discipline, teamwork and mutual assistance were essential parts of legionary life.
The composition features two individual figures brought together in a single scene. Their red tunics, military footwear and carefully represented metal armour recreate the appearance of Roman legionaries during the Imperial period. Their natural poses capture a familiar activity rather than the more conventional imagery of battle and military triumph.
This handcrafted TOY SOLDIER set is made from white metal, traditionally modelled, cast and individually hand-painted in our own workshop in Spain. Particular attention has been paid to the sculpting, historical details and interaction between the two figures.
An original piece from our Power of Rome collection, created for collectors of Roman soldiers, historical miniatures and traditional metal toy soldiers.
