Handcrafted toy soldier depicting a Roman legionary wearing a traditional paenula cloak, designed to protect against cold and wet weather. This 60 mm (1:30 scale) miniature is sculpted, cast and hand-painted, with carefully reproduced clothing folds and facial details.
The paenula was a common garment throughout the Roman world, worn by both soldiers and civilians to protect themselves from the elements. Usually made from thick woollen fabric, this practical cloak was often fitted with a hood to provide additional protection against rain and cold winds.
For Roman legionaries, the paenula was particularly useful during marches, journeys and long periods spent outdoors. Unlike military armour, this garment offered protection against bad weather and helped soldiers remain comfortable while carrying out their everyday duties away from the battlefield.
This miniature portrays a Roman legionary wearing his paenula and hood, illustrating an everyday aspect of military life in Ancient Rome that is often overlooked in representations of Roman warfare.
An excellent addition to a collection devoted to the Roman Army, its soldiers and the daily life of the legions during Antiquity.
