A 60 mm Roman infantry figure in 1:30 scale, made from white metal alloy. Modelled, cast, assembled and hand-painted in our workshop in Spain. The figure shows a legionary crouching beside a fire, preparing food on a spit over a small campfire.
The life of a Roman legionary was not limited to marching, fighting and military training. A significant part of each day was devoted to the everyday duties of camp life, including the preparation of food.
The Roman soldiers' diet was based mainly on cereals, particularly wheat, which was eaten as bread or porridge. Legumes, cheese, olives and vegetables were also common, while meat was eaten when available. Wine, usually mixed with water, was another familiar part of military life.
Legionaries took part in preparing their own meals. Soldiers sharing a tent also shared responsibilities, organising the collection of fuel, the preparation of food and the care of their equipment. Cooking was therefore an ordinary daily task and an important part of camp discipline and communal life.
This scene brings to life a less familiar aspect of the Roman army: the everyday experience of its soldiers away from battle. A moment of rest around the fire, where companionship and familiar routines helped strengthen the bonds within the legion.
