The halberd, was an pole weapon at the end of which was placed an ax topped with a spear point that allowed to cut and puncture, but also the lower end of this metal sheet curved downwards was used as the hooks of boarding and the pikes on the boats to hook the riders completely armored and knock them down from their mounts.
Once on the ground, the unfortunate knights completely covered with metal saw their movements very limited and could be easily eliminated by introducing swords or pikes in the joints of the pieces of the armor. Or simply unarmed to be exchanged for a large ransom.
In a certain sense, the halberds began to be used by subordinate commanders, becoming over time a kind of insignia for the sergeants.
