The Landsknechts were renowned mercenary infantrymen who served the princes of the Holy Roman Empire during the 15th and 16th centuries. Organised into companies known as Fähnlein, they marched beneath banners identifying their captains, territories or lords. When serving the Emperor, they could carry standards bearing the Imperial double-headed eagle, a symbol of the authority of the Empire. This TOY SOLDIER depicts one of these standard-bearers, responsible for carrying his company's banner and keeping it visible among the troops. He evokes the great mercenary armies that took part in European campaigns during the age of Charles V.
