In the fifteenth century, a revolution in the art of war took place, again the infantry took advantage in the battlefield.
Already at the end of the 100 year war, the battle of Agincourt in 1415, the English archers and their long bows struck down the proud French royal cavalry and at the end of the century, the Swiss mercenary pikemen formations stopped the most powerful European cavalry, the lansquenetes have entered the scene.
Gonzalo Fernández de Córdoba, observes this change in the warlike customs and transforms the Spanish infantry under his command into units inspired by these masses of Central European pikemen supported by the fire of the arquebusiers and the artillery.
The Spanish Tercios have been born.
Between the squares of lansquenetes and pikemen, stand out a kind of soldiers that by their risky mission had right to a double salary, of there its name doppelsoldner.
His task was to stand in front of the formation of pikemen of his own side in anticipation of the clash with the formation of opposing pikemen and with their long swords that were handled with both hands, (mandobles), breaking the enemy pikes and wounding the first rows of adversary soldiers.
