At the Battle of Pavia on 24 February 1525, Don Alonso Pita da Veiga took part in the engagement that ended with the capture of King Francis I of France. His name is remembered alongside those of Juan de Urbieta and Diego de Ávila in connection with one of the most famous episodes of that battle.
This escudero of Don Alonso Pita da Veiga evokes the men who accompanied knights on Renaissance military campaigns. He is depicted mounted on horseback and carrying a white banner bearing the red Cross of Saint Andrew, a symbol associated with the Habsburg armies. Such standards helped identify Imperial forces amid the confusion of battle.
Charles V's victory at Pavia had major political consequences. Francis I was captured and taken to Spain, where he remained until the Treaty of Madrid in 1526. The battle became a decisive episode in the Italian Wars.
