At the beginning of the 16th century, the French Gendarmerie was one of the most prestigious heavy cavalry forces in Europe. Its members, drawn mainly from the nobility, formed an elite corps whose principal role was to deliver powerful shock charges against enemy formations.

During the Italian Wars, French heavy cavalry played a central role in the campaigns launched by Francis I to secure the French Crown's influence in the Italian peninsula. The gendarmes embodied the traditional military ideals of chivalry, although their effectiveness increasingly depended on coordination with infantry, artillery and emerging firearms.

At the Battle of Pavia on 24 February 1525, the French Gendarmerie took part in some of the fiercest fighting. Its charges initially gained ground against Imperial cavalry, but the French deployment and the intervention of Imperial arquebusiers eventually turned the advance into a disastrous situation.

The French defeat was decisive. Francis I was captured and taken to Spain, where he remained until the signing of the Treaty of Madrid in 1526. Pavia became one of the best-known battles of the Italian Wars and a landmark in the transformation of European warfare during the Renaissance.

This second French gendarme belongs to our collection dedicated to the Battle of Pavia, 1525, a defining episode in the military history of the Renaissance.
