During the Roman Republic, the Hastati formed the first line of the manipular legion. These infantrymen occupied the foremost position in the Roman battle formation, ahead of the principes and triarii.
Under the manipular system, the legion was organised into smaller tactical units known as maniples, allowing greater flexibility on the battlefield than the older, more compact formations. The hastati were generally younger soldiers, with less military experience than the men serving in the later lines.
Their role was essential at the beginning of an engagement: they entered combat first and, depending on the circumstances, could withdraw to allow the principes to take their place. This organisation was characteristic of the development of the Roman army during the Republic's expansion, particularly in the third and second centuries BC.
The Roman Hastati represent a decisive period in Roman military history: the transformation of a citizen force into a disciplined army capable of challenging the great powers of the ancient Mediterranean world.
