The Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem, also known as the Hospitaller Order, originated to care for and protect pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. Officially recognised by Pope Paschal II in 1113, it later developed an important military role during the Crusades and in the Christian territories of the Iberian Peninsula. Its knights took part in the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa on 16 July 1212, fighting alongside the Christian kingdoms against the Almohad forces. The white cross was one of the Order's principal emblems. This TOY SOLDIER represents one of those warriors, identified by the distinctive symbolism of the Hospitallers.
