During the Middle Ages, the Royal Standard of Castile represented the authority of the monarch and the identity of his armies. The golden castle on a red field, the emblem of the kingdom, was one of the principal heraldic symbols of the Castilian Crown. On military campaigns, standard-bearers played an important role, carrying banners that identified different contingents and served as rallying points on the battlefield. This TOY SOLDIER evokes one of those mounted warriors serving the king, displaying the colours and heraldic symbols of medieval Castile.
