The Knights Templar originated in Jerusalem in the early 12th century to protect pilgrims travelling to the Holy Land. Their members combined religious devotion with military service, becoming one of the most influential military orders of medieval Christendom. The white mantle bearing a red cross became their most recognisable emblem. The Templars also took part in military campaigns on the Iberian Peninsula and were present at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa on 16 July 1212, when the Christian forces defeated the Almohad army. This TOY SOLDIER evokes those knights who fought under the cross of the Temple.
