The Military Order of Santiago was founded in 1170 during the reign of Ferdinand II of León, initially to defend the city of Cáceres against the Almohads. Its members combined religious life with military duties and took an active part in the campaigns of the Reconquista. The Order's distinctive red Cross of Santiago identified its knights on the battlefield. In 1212, the Order took part in the decisive Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, alongside the forces of other Christian Iberian kingdoms. This TOY SOLDIER represents one of those knights, wearing the white habit and red cross that distinguished the Order.
