The use of the German barracks cap was very common among Spanish troops and except in combat or already in the front it was difficult to see one of these soldiers with the helmet on. The custom since the Spanish war of the use of the barracks hat and the conviction that the helmet was more a hindrance made these Spanish soldiers take time to get used to the use of it. Not surprisingly, the image of the Spanish soldier for the German high command was that of a group of undisciplined individuals who always wore the uniform in a non-regulatory manner. This opinion changed radically when they witnessed the attitude of these troops in combat.
