During his stay in the training camp, and in the period of time until his baptism of fire, the German high command relied little on the military utility of the Spanish volunteers, since they considered them highly undisciplined and quarrelsome.
But, from the moment when the blue division joined the front, this opinion changed radically to the point that the greatest desire of any German unit, was that the unit that was by their side supporting them, were the SPANIARDS. They had a special tendency to retire the last and fight until the last cartridge.
