PR 063 Centurion of the German Guard

The German Guard was an elite unit associated with the personal protection of Roman emperors. It included warriors of Germanic origin who served in Rome, representing the growing presence of foreign-born soldiers within the structures of the Empire.

The recruitment of Germanic soldiers increased during the later centuries of the Roman Empire. These warriors were valued for their military abilities and could attain positions of responsibility in Roman service. Their presence reflects the complex relationship between the Roman world and the peoples living beyond its frontiers.

The imperial guard's duties included the protection of the emperor and his court. Its members could accompany the ruler on journeys and military campaigns, as well as take part in the ceremonies and official events of imperial life.

The term centurion traditionally referred to the officer commanding a century in the Roman army. He was responsible for maintaining discipline, leading his men and ensuring the unit's effectiveness in battle. The title of this figure evokes the combination of Germanic military traditions and Roman organisation that characterised certain troops of the later Empire.

During the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, Rome increasingly recruited soldiers from Germanic peoples. Some served in imperial units, while others eventually held positions of considerable importance in the Roman army and political life.

This figure represents a Centurion of the German Guard, evoking the warriors who came from beyond the Empire's frontiers to become part of its military establishment and the protection of imperial power.

This miniature belongs to our Power of Rome collection, dedicated to the armies, historical figures and peoples that shaped the Roman world.
