PR 067 Draconarius

The draconarius was the standard-bearer responsible for carrying the draco, a dragon-shaped military standard that became one of the most distinctive symbols associated with certain cavalry units in Late Antiquity.

The Roman draco generally consisted of a dragon's head or that of a mythical creature, with a long fabric body attached behind it. As the horseman advanced, the wind passed through the standard, causing it to unfurl and flutter, creating the impression of a moving dragon. Some examples may also have incorporated elements that produced sounds in the wind, adding to their intimidating effect.

This type of standard had antecedents in the military traditions of the steppe peoples, particularly the Sarmatians and other Iranian peoples. Its adoption by the Roman army reflects the influence that eastern military cultures exerted on imperial forces.

During the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD, the draco became associated with Roman cavalry. Its use is particularly well known in the military context of the Later Roman Empire, when mounted units played an increasingly important role in frontier defence and military campaigns.

The draconarius was more than a soldier carrying a flag: he bore a symbol of his unit's identity and a visual reference that helped troops recognise their formation amid the confusion of battle. Standards played an essential role in maintaining military cohesion and identifying units on the battlefield.

With its distinctive draco standard, this figure represents one of the most unusual military traditions of the later Roman army. A miniature dedicated to Roman cavalry and the evolution of military symbols during the final centuries of the Roman Empire.

This miniature belongs to our Power of Rome collection, dedicated to the armies, historical figures and peoples that shaped the Roman world.
