PR 069 Julius Caesar

Gaius Julius Caesar (100-44 BC) was one of the most influential figures in Roman history. A general, politician and writer, his remarkable military career and political decisions profoundly transformed the Roman Republic and laid the foundations for the future imperial power.

His conquest of Gaul, carried out between 58 and 50 BC, greatly expanded the territories under Roman control and established his reputation as a commander. His campaigns, recorded in his Commentaries on the Gallic War, remain among the most important historical sources for understanding these events.

In 49 BC, Caesar crossed the Rubicon River at the head of his troops, challenging the authority of the Senate and triggering a new civil war. After defeating his opponents, he became the dominant figure in Roman politics.

In 48 BC, he intervened in the Egyptian dynastic conflict, supporting Cleopatra VII against her brother Ptolemy XIII. The struggle developed into the so-called Alexandrian War, during which Caesar secured his position in the city and strengthened Roman influence over the Ptolemaic kingdom.

After returning to Rome, Caesar accumulated extraordinary powers and was appointed dictator perpetuo in 44 BC. However, his concentration of power aroused fierce opposition among a group of senators, who assassinated him on the Ides of March, 15 March 44 BC.

Caesar's death did not stop Rome's transformation. The subsequent civil wars culminated in the victory of Octavian, his political heir, who became Augustus, the first Roman emperor.

Julius Caesar remains an essential figure for understanding the end of the Republic and the birth of the Roman imperial system. This representation belongs to our Power of Rome collection, dedicated to the leading figures and events of Roman history.
