During the 1st century BC, the Germanic tribes represented one of the major military challenges faced by Rome as it expanded across Central Europe. Comprising numerous peoples and tribal confederations, these warriors were known for their fighting spirit and military traditions, which differed considerably from the disciplined formations of the Roman legions.

Germanic weapons and equipment varied according to tribal traditions, social status and individual resources. Wooden shields, often reinforced with a central metal boss, were an essential part of a warrior's defensive equipment. Swords, spears and other weapons were also widely used in combat.

This miniature portrays a Germanic warrior of the 1st century BC, wearing trousers and fighting with a bare torso. He carries a large kite-shaped shield decorated with striking red and green geometric patterns, while his sword completes his equipment.

An interesting representation of the peoples who challenged Roman expansion, making this figure a valuable addition to collections devoted to Ancient warfare, Germanic tribes and the enemies of the Roman legions.
