The Landsknechts were famous mercenary infantrymen who served the princes of the Holy Roman Empire during the 15th and 16th centuries. They became particularly prominent under Emperor Charles V, taking part in military campaigns across Europe. Their clothing was renowned for its vivid colours, feathered hats and slashed garments, a distinctive fashion that also influenced the dress of officers and captains. This TOY SOLDIER portrays the squire of one such captain: an armed attendant accompanying his superior and carrying military equipment, with a helmet tucked beneath his arm and a long pole weapon in his hand. A tribute to the mercenary troops that helped shape European warfare during the Renaissance.
