PR 037 Legio V macedonica optio

The Roman optio was the second-in-command of a century, serving directly under the centurion. Usually an experienced veteran legionary, he had demonstrated the leadership and military abilities required to take on greater responsibilities within the Roman army.

During battle, the optio occupied a position at the rear of the formation, helping maintain order and discipline among the soldiers. His helmet therefore featured a longitudinal crest, unlike the transverse crest worn by centurions. This distinctive arrangement allowed legionaries to identify him easily by looking towards the side of the formation.

The feathers decorating his helmet recall the ancient ornaments of archaic Italic helmets, giving this Roman officer a particularly distinctive appearance.

This Legio V Macedonica Roman Toy Soldier represents one of the key officers responsible for the organisation and discipline of the Roman army. An excellent collectible for enthusiasts of Roman military history and Imperial Roman legions.
