The murmillo was one of the most recognisable types of gladiator in ancient Rome. The name is traditionally associated with the Greek word mormylos, meaning a kind of fish, a reference often connected with the distinctive fish-shaped crest featured on the gladiator's helmet.

The murmillo typically fought with a gladius, a short sword, and a large rectangular Roman-style shield. His defensive equipment included a distinctive helmet with a crest, arm protection and a greave worn on one leg. His most familiar opponent was the Thraex, or Thracian gladiator, although other pairings are also documented.

Gladiatorial contests were among the most popular public spectacles in the Roman world. They took place in amphitheatres throughout the Empire and followed established traditions involving different gladiator classes, specialised training and combat equipment. Gladiators could be enslaved people, prisoners of war or free men who had chosen this profession.

Before entering the arena, each gladiator prepared for a contest demanding strength, endurance and skill. The murmillo became an enduring symbol of Roman gladiatorial combat and the spectacular public entertainments of ancient Rome.
