HANDCRAFTED TOY SOLDIER representing a German knight serving in the Imperial army during the 1525 campaign at Pavia. Sculpted and cast in white metal at 1:30 scale, this mounted piece features carefully modelled armour, horse and long cavalry lance. Each piece is assembled and hand-painted in our workshop in Spain, following the traditional craftsmanship of Kronprinz Toy Soldiers.
In the armies of Charles V, heavy cavalry continued to play an essential role throughout the Italian Wars. This German knight of the Imperial army evokes the men-at-arms who took part in the campaign of 1525. Mounted on a light-coloured horse, he wears full armour and a metal helmet, and carries a long cavalry lance. A red saddle cloth contrasts with the pale coat of the horse and the steel of the rider’s armour. At the Battle of Pavia on 24 February 1525, the Imperial forces brought together Spanish, German and Italian contingents against the army of Francis I of France. Imperial cavalry took part in a battle shaped by the coordination of different arms: men-at-arms, pikemen, arquebusiers and Landsknechts. Charles V’s victory ended with the capture of the French king and confirmed Pavia’s importance in the Italian Wars and in the transformation of European warfare during the Renaissance. They also served in the emperor’s Italian campaigns.
