The Praetorian cohorts used special standards. The first cohort used to be adorned with wall crowns, laurel and oak crowns, figures of victory and portraits and symbols pertaining to the emperor of the moment. The other cohorts were identified by a golden rectangle with the number of the engraved or embossed cohort and a number of pads or disks relative to the number of the cohort. In this case four because it is the IV cohort.
