PR 007 – Cornicen (Roman Military Musician)

In the Roman army, the transmission of orders and signals was essential for maintaining the coordination of troops during marches, military manoeuvres and, above all, on the battlefield.

In an age when long-distance communication relied mainly on visual and acoustic signals, military musicians played an essential role in the organisation of the Roman legions.

The Cornicen was responsible for playing the cornu, a large metal wind instrument with a distinctive curved shape. Its structure incorporated a crossbar that provided support and made it easier to handle while playing.

The cornu produced powerful and recognisable sounds that could be heard over considerable distances. Its signals were used to communicate orders, announce unit movements and coordinate the different actions of the legion.

The cornicen was not simply a musician whose purpose was to entertain the troops. He was a specialised member of the Roman army, integrated into its military communication system. His role was particularly important when the noise of battle made it impossible to transmit commands by voice.

Together with the tubicines, who played the Roman tuba, and the bucinatores, who sounded the bucina, the cornicines formed part of an acoustic signalling system that helped maintain discipline and coordination among Roman troops.

This figure represents one of these military musicians, whose instruments helped Roman legions manoeuvre and fight as organised military units.
