ARTISAN TOY SOLDIER depicting a knight of the Order of Calatrava, mounted on a horse in full charge. The rider wears chainmail, a closed metal helmet and a white surcoat, and carries a shield bearing the Order's black cross. He wields a long lance, while the horse is covered with a flowing white caparison decorated with large black Calatrava crosses. Modelled, cast, assembled and hand-painted, with particular attention to the armour and heraldic details. 1:30 scale.
Founded in 1158 under the patronage of King Sancho III of Castile, the Order of Calatrava was the first major military order established in the Christian kingdoms of the Iberian Peninsula. Its knights, following the Cistercian rule, were entrusted with defending frontier fortresses and took an active part in the Reconquista. At the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, on 16 July 1212, they fought alongside the Orders of Santiago, the Temple and Saint John in the Christian army against the Almohads. This TOY SOLDIER evokes those Calatravan warriors, recognised by their white habit and the Order's cross, shown here in black.
