The Order of the Hospital of Saint John of Jerusalem originated in the Holy Land, caring for pilgrims and the sick who arrived in Jerusalem. Officially recognised by Pope Paschal II in 1113, it soon assumed military duties to protect travellers and defend Christian territories. In the Iberian Peninsula, its knights took an active part in the Reconquista. On 16 July 1212, the Hospitallers fought at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa, forming in the centre of the Christian army alongside the Templar and Calatravan orders. This TOY SOLDIER evokes those warriors of the Order, recognised by the white eight-pointed cross that symbolised their tradition.
