The training of a legionary was based on the preparation for the long marches, and the construction of camps, in two essential movements:
The use of the javelin or pilum and the sword or gladius.
When the legion moves forward, the legionaries who are closest to the enemy, throw their javelins to then, drawing their sword, to launch the charge, always in formation and disciplined.
