The Balearic slingers were among the most renowned warriors of the ancient world. Originating from the islands of Mallorca and Menorca, they earned an outstanding reputation for their skill with the sling, a seemingly simple weapon capable of hurling projectiles over considerable distances with remarkable accuracy.
Their expertise was the result of years of practice. From an early age, they trained with slings of different sizes and learned to use both stone and lead projectiles. Their effectiveness made them highly valued by the armies of the ancient Mediterranean, particularly by the Carthaginians.
During the Punic Wars, Balearic slingers served in the Carthaginian forces. They also accompanied Hannibal Barca during his campaigns against Rome, providing skirmishing support and harassing enemy formations before the main armies engaged in close combat.
This figure evokes one of these skilled warriors, recalling the Balearic slingers who fought in Hannibal's campaigns and their important contribution to the military struggles between Carthage and Rome.
