The Nabataeans were an ancient Arab people who prospered through their control of the trade routes crossing the deserts of Arabia and connecting the southern Arabian Peninsula with the Mediterranean. Their kingdom had its capital at Petra, in modern-day Jordan, an important commercial and cultural centre of the ancient Near East.
During the 1st century AD, camels played a fundamental role in the Nabataean economy and everyday life. These animals were essential for travelling long distances across arid regions, transporting goods and supplying the caravans that moved along the trade routes. The Nabataeans also used camels for riding and possessed extensive knowledge of desert travel and survival.
This figure depicts a Nabataean camel handler riding a dromedary, guiding it with the reins and a long staff. He wears a light-coloured tunic and a blue head covering. The animal is equipped with a saddle and a blanket decorated with red and black geometric patterns, together with the fittings required for riding and transport.
The scene evokes the constant movement of people, animals and merchandise along the caravan routes of ancient Arabia Petraea, where camel handlers played an essential role. Petra and its surrounding territory remained at the heart of an extensive trading network until the Nabataean kingdom was incorporated into the Roman Empire in AD 106, under Emperor Trajan.
This HANDCRAFTED TOY SOLDIER is made from white metal alloy, in 1:30 scale, and belongs to our Power of Rome collection. A distinctive piece for collectors of historical miniatures, figures from the ancient world and scenes depicting the peoples and trade routes of the ancient Near East.
