PR 068 Attila the Hun

Attila (c. 406-453 AD) was the most famous ruler of the Huns and one of the most feared figures of Late Antiquity. From 434, he ruled alongside his brother Bleda. Following Bleda's death around 445, Attila became sole ruler of a powerful dominion that extended across large parts of Central and Eastern Europe.

The Huns were a people of steppe origins whose military strength relied heavily on cavalry and the use of the composite bow. Their mobility, ability to launch rapid attacks and skill as mounted archers made them formidable opponents for the Roman armies and other peoples of the period.

During Attila's reign, the Eastern Roman Empire faced repeated campaigns and incursions in the Balkans. In the West, his best-known intervention took place in 451 AD, when he crossed the Rhine and invaded Gaul at the head of a coalition of peoples. There he confronted an alliance led by the Roman general Flavius Aetius and the Visigothic king Theodoric I at the Battle of the Catalaunian Plains. The outcome and strategic significance of the battle remain subjects of historical debate, but it brought Attila's campaign in Gaul to a halt.

The following year, in 452 AD, Attila invaded northern Italy and sacked several cities. However, he did not conquer Rome. His withdrawal took place amid logistical difficulties, disease and diplomatic negotiations, including an embassy led by Pope Leo I.

Attila's death in 453 AD triggered disputes among his sons and contributed to the fragmentation of Hunnic power. His name remained deeply embedded in historical memory as a symbol of the power of the steppe peoples and of the profound crisis facing the Western Roman Empire.

This mounted representation of Attila the Hun belongs to our Power of Rome collection, featuring the great historical figures, armies and peoples that shaped the Roman world and Late Antiquity.
