PR 071 Judean Royal Guard

This figure depicts a warrior of the royal guard of Judea, inspired by the soldiers who served in the military retinues of the region's rulers during Antiquity.

His equipment features a golden metal helmet and finely detailed scale armour, made up of small overlapping metal plates that protected the torso. Beneath the armour he wears a green tunic, while his legs are covered with protective, wrapped-looking garments. He carries an elongated shield decorated with floral and vegetal motifs against a blue background.

Judea occupied a strategic position in the ancient Near East, between the major centres of power in Egypt, Syria and Mesopotamia. During the 1st century BC, the Hasmonean kingdom became increasingly integrated into Rome's sphere of influence. In 63 BC, Pompey intervened in Jerusalem, beginning a new period of Roman influence in the region. Later, Herod the Great ruled Judea as a client king of Rome.

This miniature evokes the military world of Hellenistic and Herodian Judea, a region where local traditions coexisted with military influences from the eastern Mediterranean.

HANDCRAFTED TOY SOLDIER, created for collectors who appreciate historical miniatures and the armies of the ancient world.
